Shadow Protocol is the most terrifying game released this year. The abandoned research facility setting is dripping with atmosphere — flickering lights, distant screams, and the constant feeling that something is watching you. The investigation mechanics are clever, requiring you to piece together what happened through environmental storytelling and found documents. Combat is deliberately scarce and desperate, forcing you to choose between fight and flight. The sound design deserves special mention — play with headphones for the full experience. The story takes some genuinely unexpected turns in the final act. Only the slightly clunky inventory management keeps this from a perfect score.
